this is, to the best of my recollection, the first abbywinters video i've watched all the way through in more than twenty years of watching girl/girl porn. partly that's because i've never had much interest in "amateur" content, preferring to indulge the heightened fantasy of mainstream porn, fully aware of how unrealistic it is. but also it's because, as far as i could tell from my very cursory awareness of the brand for the past couple of decades, it was very white. so i was pleasantly surprised when the first girl/girl video posted to the site this month features a black woman.
browsing through recent postings, it's not as lily-white as i remembered (or assumed), although i'd venture to say it's still very middle-class, in the way that a lot of bespoke, artisanal internet content is, because working-class people are more interested in actually making money than in relentlessly harping on their authenticity. (is abbywinters the etsy of porn? that's probably too precious a comparison.) in any case, i was prepared for awkwardness, camera-shyness, and bad filmmaking: the hallmarks of amateur content.
i needn't have worried. both maely and danai have shot for abbywinters a bunch, and if they weren't as comfortable together as old friends, they were at least as comfortable together as people on a first date who want to have sex with each other. i enjoyed their (seemingly slightly rehearsed) pre-sex conversation, bonding over a shared love of the characters from the cartoon stephen universe which are printed on maely's dress, and moving into the sex in a smooth if not entirely natural way. they communicated not only well during sex, but intimately and occasionally irrelevantly, with the kind of mutual concern and willingness to please that professional sex-havers rarely show. i can begin to see the appeal of amateur porn, if it's always this considerate and intelligent.
of course, then there's the production values. i can say that the lighting was excellent: the dinginess and sallowness i've come to expect from amateur was nowhere to be seen. if anything, the colors were over- rather than undersaturated. but the camera angles were awkward and often ungainly, with no eye for shot composition or blocking. (not that such an eye would be welcome in abbywinters' pseudo-amateur world. but it's what i'm looking for.) there were apparently two cameras used; i could tell because one of them wandered into the shot.
i feel odd about grading this kind of thing on the same scale that i apply to the major, soul-sucking porn corporations; but i also don't believe it's inherently better (more honest, more ethical, more authentic) than corporate porn. nor do i think it's inherently worse: like every porn producer that sticks around, it's serving a niche. it's not my niche, but i can see the appeal.
