my usual vocal despising of girlfriends will have to be put on hold here, because violet rain, the younger starlet in this scene (originally released on dvd in september of 2018) was taken off of life support in march of this year after a fatal drug overdose that left her in a vegetative state. she had been out partying two weeks earlier and was left abandoned at a los angeles-area hospital by an unknown party, with evidence of having been sexually assaulted. she was nineteen. the cruelty and arbitrariness of the low-level celebrity lifestyle, the invincibility of youth, and the mythmaking of an industry all too willing to pretend that teenagers are fully-formed adults prepared to be responsible for their own safety in every circumstance means another dead young woman, little known and soon forgotten.

i've never seen another scene with her before; if i had, and if i'd developed any kind of affection for her, i probably wouldn't be able to watch this (i still can't watch august ames). as it is, i can only regret the loss of a pretty young woman of limited acting ability but who was an enthusiastic if still tentative sexual performer (she was only ever in three girl/girl scenes). eva long, as the older, more experienced, and more vocally expressive participant, undoubtedly carries the scene, which is one of the quieter, more languid entries in the girlfriends arsenal this month. i never believed their connection, but i believed the sex.

the visuals are slightly more competent than usual: i always hate scenes with windows in the background because the visual inconsistency of the various light sources looks terrible, but other than that sin, the shots looked decent for once. or maybe i was just distracted thinking about the late violet rain rather than about how unoriginal it all was. it's hard not to attribute the emotion occasioned by her appearance in the scene to the scene itself, which didn't earn that tenderness or sorrow, but is nevertheless marked with it for me.

rest in peace.
