i haven't talked about gonzo here much yet. partly that's because the girl/girl audience tends to be much more invested in story and character than in just wanting to see sex acts, so scenario girl/girl porn is better financially rewarded than gonzo girl/girl. i've certainly expressed that preference here. but there's good and bad gonzo, as there is good and bad everything.
gonzo porn has developed a reputation for being more extreme, rough, and even degrading than scenario porn, but there's nothing inherent in the format that means it has to be. "gonzo porn" was coined in reference to gonzo journalism, in which reporters acknowledge their own involvement and impact in the story instead of maintaining the traditional view-from-nowhere pretense. gonzo porn, then, just means that the performers are having sex for the camera in their own personas, not pretending to be anyone else. it can be documentarian, where they talk directly to the camera about what they're doing, or it can be fly-on-the-wall, or it can directly involve the camera operator, or it can be shot in any number of other ways. extreme porn is often gonzo, because pornographers are rarely imaginative enough to develop scenarios in which extreme sex acts make narrative sense, but sweet and romantic porn like girlsway's we like girls project is also gonzo.
in between, and changing over time, is mason's lesbianx series. only a few years old, it has settled into a groove in which relatively fetishy acts (at least for the relatively vanilla world of girl/girl) like anal, double penetration, and squirting, are the usual themes. more recently it has featured softer scenes, usually interracial (the implication of which, that interracial girl/girl is in itself a non-vanilla fetish, is deeply upsetting), and the traditional interview to camera, in which mason talks to the girls about what they're going to do, has also recently been replaced by generic pretty-girl poses set to trap edm.
but regardless of how or what she chooses to shoot, mason's intensity and intimacy as a director is goddamn unparalleled. the settings and lighting can be super basic, even hideous; the camera angles are often unattractive and awkward; the editing is arbitrary and capricious. but there's still an animating intelligence behind the floating camera, a brilliance at capturing action and spatial relations, and a single-minded focus on the interactions and pleasure of the women themselves, that even my preemptory demand for originality and beautiful visuals can't ignore. some of my favorite scenes ever have been shot by mason; and i can almost guarantee that more will be.
this isn't one of them. not that it's bad, just generic. georgia jones is a girl/girl legend, and izzy lush is new to me, but their swapping a pink glass dildo back and forth between each other's assholes is convincingly enjoyable. they communicate well, if not at the level of someone like lena paul (whose lesbianx scenes are appointment viewing), although izzy's near-constant wailing in pleasure is repetitive enough to have an unkind interpretation placed on it. this is an instance when i really miss the interview to camera, since knowing georgia's personality gives me a good read on how thoroughly she's enjoying the scene, while not knowing izzy at all keeps a barrier up.
both the chain-mail curtains in the background and the denim shorts both girls open the scene wearing ended up giving off moiré patterns on my monitor, hardly a dealbreaker but reminiscent of sloppy 2000s-era porn. i only mention it.
