despite my disdain, girlfriends is just about neck-and-neck with girlsway as the most prolific girl/girl porn brand in the industry; and thanks to the happenstance of when the weekly schedule falls on the monthly calendar, i'm reviewing two girlfriends scenes before even one girlsway. this one is from a dvd that was released in november 2018, from a line that is the closest girlfriends gets, in their stodgy, uninflected way, to gonzo.
gina and whitney sit down with each other and ask pat questions about each others' sexual histories and how they deal with the stigma of being in porn. after about twenty minutes of gina's stoner philosophy and whitney's practised generalizations, they smile awkwardly at the camera and we cut to kissing. they are much more comfortable with the sex than they were looking like panelists on a public access-level talk show, and the camera work is even slightly better, even if only because the bedroom set is colorful enough for there to be visual contrast.
girlfriends' refusal to apply any color correction to their raw footage, their terrible mixing so that the sound goes into the red whenever the girls vocalize their passion at any volume higher than speaking, and their general inability to frame their shots or light their sets in an interesting manner remains constant. the camera work here isn't as wholly incompetent as it was in the india summer/kristen scott scene, but it's still not good: letting other cameras drift into the shot is a failure of both shooting and editing.
i'm still ranking the performances relatively highly, because gina and whitney are both personable and good at sex, taking care to communicate their enjoyment in believable ways, and if their interviews weren't brilliant they were never outright embarrassing. whitney, the performer i know better, is a better actor, but gina, whose work i haven't followed for several years, impressed me with her dedication to her partner's pleasure.
