the last transfixed scene of the month appears here, which feels like an invitation to wax philosophic about the series and its place in girl/girl porn. i've already given those thoughts, though, scattered throughout my reviews of trans scenes. i'll just reiterate again for the record that i am including scenes between trans women and cis women (and would include scenes between trans women and trans women if i knew of any released during april) here because trans women are women, and the categories that the porn industry uses to silo off differences are crudely outdated and need changing. in the minuscule way i am able to contribute to that change, i'm attempting to.
this is the third time natalie mars has appeared this month, and because it's transfixed rather than a mindgeek or kink site it's the best scene she's appeared in all month, even if she does nothing much different. which is an illustration of how much production choices matter to a scene: bree mills' eclectic, broadly referential concepts for transfixed cast natalie and haley reed as a recombinant thelma and louise to spectacular effect. haley's hair is even styled in imitation of susan sarandon's curls, although she's in geena davis' outfit; naturally, once again the cis woman in transfixed is styled more butch.
i've not noticed haley reed before, which looks more like an oversight on my part than anything else, although she doesn't emphasize girl/girl work. but she and natalie work so well together, from the stylish opening sequence in which they hitchhike and get picked up by and swiftly rob will pounder (once again distinguishing himself in a nonsex cameo) to their gleeful rendezvous at a seedy desert motel, that i'm impressed. natalie mars always gives a good performance, but her chemistry with haley is spectacular: their extensive sex moves fluidly through positions which were clearly never choreographed, just the spontaneous result of two sexual athletes enjoying each other. in the heat of the moment, natalie even fists haley, an episode of such intense intimacy and trust between the two of them that it makes every scene built around pre-planned fisting look like a tawdry circus trick.
the filmmaking is exquisite, stylish without being overbearing, intimate and intelligent and intensely beautiful throughout. that hardly needs to be said, it's transfixed; but again, the keen eye and smart production work that makes this series special should be the standard that every scene is held to, and is part of the reason why my scores for so many scenes recorded here are so middling: i know that they can be done better. i have proof right here. of course, my ideal solution, slowing down production so that every scene can be given the time, effort and budget of a transfixed scene, would be unacceptable to either the bulk of the paying audience or to the corporate penny-counters who make the real decisions. so i'm grateful to have scenes like this in the meantime.
can i imagine it being better? sure; the opening is telegraphically laconic and could use punching up, and their dialogue once they get alone is painfully generic, although their communication during sex is superb. the ironic ending, with sirens and flashing lights drifting through the motel window, is a nice touch, and a nod to the source material's famous grimly satisfying close; but it's hard to feel it as anything more than a reference, since apart from being present for some intense sex we know nothing about who these women are or why we should care whether or not they get caught. missa x scripting with bree mills direction might be one way to approach my actual ideal.
anyway. yay transfixed. still the top scoring site.
