i haven't watched any girlfriends material in going on eight years, and it was never at the top of my list even when it was a regular part of my diet. but it's gotten very bad. or maybe it's stayed the same and all the rest of porn has gotten so much better. either way, i watched the entire first act in a full-body cringe, as india summer (a psychic) guided kristen scott (alongside her friends bree daniels and milana may, whose scene will presumably be upcoming) through an inane, excruciatingly slow crystal-ball session designed to tell them they are all lesbians.
i like kristen scott a lot as a performer and have been impressed by her acting in other productions, but she's given so little to work with here that before the sex starts she's virtually a nonentity (bree and milana, who do more talking, are so awkward that it's not much better). india, the consummate professional, is the only one to carry the whole dumb premise off with any savoir faire; and even getting into the sex is awkward, because i guess that's girlfriends' fetish?
the camerawork is downright janky (there are dashcam videos with a better sense of composition, steadiness of purpose, and ability to follow action), the lighting is hideous (it wouldn't be girlfriends otherwise), reminiscent of daytime soaps from the 1980s, which is exactly what the decor looks like too. the editing is slow and pokey in the pre-sex intro, and almost nonexistent during the sex, so that there are hugely awkward transition shots whenever the performers move out of range of the single shot that was only barely covering them in the first place.
the saving grace is that sex: both india and kristen are professionals who like and are very good at what they do, and even through that flat, uninteresting lens their genuine ability and enjoyment of one another comes through. to its credit, girlfriends allots more time than most companies for foreplay, and india in particular is terrific at talking her way through the experience. kristen, meanwhile, doesn't need to talk much; her legendary physical reactions are worth a thousand words, and her moans max out the very shoddy microphone equipment.
because streaming is an afterthought to girlfriends' business model, this is the third scene from a dvd that was released to the physical market in july 2018. it looks like everything else i'll be reviewing from them this month is of a similar vintage. i doubt any of them will score much better; they have their formula down, and it's close to unwatchable for me.
