i've always been a little skeptical of jenna sativa.
not in the sense of the standard girl/girl fan "oh she's not really a lesbian" moaning, or even in the more discerning porn fan's belief that her white-of-the-eyes orgasms are over-the-top and inauthentic. i am one who appreciates any effort performers put in to convince the camera they're having orgasms, and i don't expect any girl/girl performer (whether exclusively so or not) to be a six on the kinsey scale. girl/girl porn is made for hetero consumption; if queer people are able to enjoy it too, that's a bonus rather than the objective.
no, my issue with jenna sativa is that she rarely feels committed to the scene. i don't mean the sex: she's one of the top three or four all-time girl/girl performers for a reason, and can be justifiably proud of the hard work she puts in below the waist. i mean, primarily, that she's not much of an actress, and is especially not a very demonstrative actress, so that scenarios that call for very expressive affects, such as bubbliness, angst, wistfulness, or fear, have stumbled when she's put at the center of them.
but she has aged into a certain confidence. she's still an essentially sedate performer, expending a minimum of effort for a maximum of effect, but as her measurements have expanded (in a truly stunning fashion) and her revenue streams have begun to include financial and other forms of domination, she's become much better at playing a sexually confident grown woman than she ever was playing the ingenue.
the ingenue role here is taken by kayla paris, who does great work with it, conveying both wide-eyed excitement and giddy devotion to jenna as her mistress. not that there's much of a script other than what the two of them improvise together once jenna walks in on kayla bound with a man's tie in front of the bed. jenna takes control of the scene from the very beginning, dominating kayla with an authority that lets her lean into her passivity, and far more inventive and consistent with her domineering dirty talk, degrading kayla in a playful, loving way, than i ever would have expected from her. she seems to genuinely relish the role, which makes me wish that more girl/girl scenarios allowed for even such light bdsm play as is engaged in here.
unfortunately the filmmaking does not live up to the performances. the lighting is exquisite and it looks ravishing on a surface level (if perhaps a little oversmoothed; the shyla jennings/samantha hayes twistys scene had the same problem), but the camera angles are all over the place and the shot compositions are sometimes weirdly unbalanced, with the action all on the lower third of the screen while an empty bed takes up the rest of the screen. whoever shot this (mindgeek gives no credits) might have been going for "arty," but the effect is less like andrew blake or michael ninn and more like a gonzo camera operator trying to be original. the editing too has issues (jump-cut from "sit on my face" to... not sitting on her face), and just as there's no real intro, the outro also fails to satisfy, or even to communicate anything in particular: kayla is sleeping while jenna touches up her lipstick and flounces off. uh, okay?
it's still a pretty great scene thanks to the central performances and the real chemistry between them, with kayla happily rising to meet every one of jenna's imperious demands or put-downs. but it could have been even better.
