every year gonzo studio elegant angel releases several all-new compilations featuring major contenders for the big avn awards: this scene is from performers of the year 2019. it's the only girl/girl scene on the disc; angela white (who won poty for the second year running in 2019), kissa sins, and abella danger were all in boy/girl scenes. we've seen all of them here over the course of the past month, if not necessarily at their best.
we've also seen gina valentine and katrina jade here quite recently, and this is gina's third appearance in a gonzo scene this month. like her girlfriends scene with whitney wright, it opens with a dual interview to camera, although because elegant angel is a much better studio than girlfriends the interview is edited and intercut with pretty-girl posing to generic edm. the actual sex doesn't start until ten minutes in, which i'm not complaining about. both gina and katrina are interesting people and their conversational interactions during the interview portion are at nearly as fascinating as the sex they then have. and it's better shot.
because the sex is in a shower. there's a long and august porn tradition of sex-in-shower scenes, because there's been a long and august tradition of people having sex in showers for as long as there have been showers. but it's really hard to shoot well, due to the confined space, the probability of harsh lighting and sound, and the general lack of room to employ different positions. i very much appreciated that (i think for the first time all month when anyone has been in a shower) katrina and gina actually allowed their hair to get wet: there are obvious reasons why a performer wouldn't want to get their hair wet if the sex is going to be outside the shower, but it always strikes me as ludicrous anyway.
i don't know how well they deserve their performer-of-the-year accolades (my limited porn consumption means that i'm not well placed to evaluate any but girl/girl performances), but they certainly lived up to it here: their passion, enjoyment, and plentiful energy made up for the limited degree of creative movement that the location allowed them. i may not have believed entirely in their total enjoyment (it's hard to imagine wet tile as anything but uncomfortable), but i believed their performances.
the filmmaking could only be adequate: the giant window in the shower bled an eyesore patch of light all over, the continuous clatter of the running shower made the sound recording difficult to listen to, and the constricted space meant that there was basically only one angle to shoot from. but given those limitations, the camerawork was still quite good, regularly finding the best possible shot under the circumstances and following the action with dogged tenacity.
i wish that elegant angel had staggered their spring releases differently, so that any of the scenes from lesbian performers of the year 2019 or (especially) the ivy wolfe/jane wilde scene from best new starlets 2019 had shown up on their site in april. i like their stylish approach to gonzo, and would have enjoyed reviewing more from them. but as it is, i'm glad i got to review this.
