genre parody is such an easy way to make porn with a modicum of intelligence, it's surprising that there isn't more of it. perhaps the modicum of intelligence is the issue.
the scene opens with riley reid sitting in an almost totally dark office except for convenient bars of light on her face and where the client will sit in the chair opposite, doing a bad philip marlowe impression in voiceover as kenna james walks in, distraught because her wife may be cheating on her. riley takes the case after being promised double. the budgets under which porn operates are obvious when the cheating wife she photos on a stakeout is clearly also kenna james (although the woman she's cheating with is a cameoing eliza ibarra). kenna is presented with the evidence, gets upset, and then demands that riley take her clothes off so she can cheat too.
it's all perfectly ridiculous, and is meant to be. (riley's concern that kenna might damage her camera in her fury is genuinely hilarious.) the tropes of private-eye noir are so well-worn at this point that parody rather than the thing itself is probably more familiar to the majority of consumers alive today, so when the sex starts riley makes no attempt to remain hardboiled nor kenna to be a woman scorned; they're just twenty-first century young women having a pleasant time together, occasional references to what kenna's wife is missing notwithstanding.
as one of the last things stills by alan shot before being suspended by gamma at the end of 2018, it's notable as being a stylistic departure for him, at least in terms of regular girlsway scenes. (his features are of course full of genre pastiche.) cool blues and dark shadows, even once the sex begins and sitcom-style single-vantage shooting goes into effect, are so different from the usual girlsway pink-and-white palette that i'm now slightly annoyed that such a minimal amount of effort didn't go into making every girlsway scene visually striking.
the usual girlsway nonsense still applies, though: ridiculous positions in ridiculous places (a desk and a swivel chair? honestly), stagey shooting and sloppy editing (what the hell is that shot of riley's hand holding her thigh?), ungainly framing and no better than adequate action coverage. i was bored long before the scene was over, which is no knock on the abilities and enthusiasm of kenna and riley (well, maybe riley; fuck her appropriative, exploitative ass), just on the unimaginative way their fun was blocked and shot.
i'll say it every time just so there's no mistake: fuck stills by alan, and may he never return to girlsway.
