i had almost given up on sweetheart's lesbian beauties series. i first noticed it four or five years ago, when sweetheart was one of a number of studios putting out sensual, story-driven girl/girl porn starring women of color. (r.i.p. filly films, love's kitty, and several others.) but when i started paying attention again in 2018, sweetheart seemed to have abandoned that market in favor of feature-oriented work à la new sensations (perhaps thanks to jackie st. james revamping sister brand sweet sinner). but looking back, i guess it was always common for the lesbian beauties series to skip a year.
in any case, i'm really glad it came back this month, since my interest in highlighting the work of women of color has only grown. this round, the subtitle for the series is volume 20: black & asian. a basic enough premise: one black woman and one asian women per scene. cut and dry.
only misty stone is not just any black woman. she's one of the longest-serving pornstars in the business, and might even be the longest-serving black female pornstar ever. she's been doing milf roles for the past decade, though only because that's where the work is: as far as looks go she's still merely grown, not middle-aged. and here too she plays the mother of vina sky's unseen best friend, surprised when vina comes to visit even though the friend is out of the house. vina, of course, is interested in misty, and the script thoughtfully provides the backstory of a drunken kiss that ignited the passion in the younger woman. misty is hesitant at first, trying to deny that anything happened, but once vina convinces her she's serious she slips easily into the domineering role she is always so good at playing.
because misty stone is one of the best dirty-talkers in all of porn. she's not always the most imaginative (the phrase "oh my fucking god" gets its usual workout), but for intensity and inflection i'm not sure she has an equal. she's a natural domme, ordering vina through the several positions and bringing vocal heat with each one; and like many, many scene partners before her, vina sky gets kind of overshadowed: her observations about wetness get drowned out by misty's torrent of speech.
ricky greenwood's photography here is much less indebted to dark browns and golds than some of the work i've complained about this month: in an airy room with lots of natural light, he shoots the contrast between the two bodies exceptionally well. it's not an immense contrast (misty is on the lighter side), but here at least my frequent complaint about porn not knowing how to light black people does not apply: misty has never looked better. there were a few editing snafus (unless misty repeated herself even more automatically than usual), as it seems the audio got replayed over different shots a couple of times, but for the most part the technical side was fine.
