four days into this review challenge, i finally meet up with girlsway, the biggest and most successful girl/girl brand of the decade. of course i have lots of history with girlsway and plenty of opinions about it. but i'm trying to take each scene as it comes, without loading preconceptions onto it.
that's hard to do here, because the emily willis and scarlett sage episode of we like girls isn't even two months old, and it was one of the most adorable scenes i've ever seen in my life. if this doesn't live up to it, blame the restrictions of scenario porn, which keep scarlett and emily from being as unaffectedly natural and conversational with each other as they are when they don't have to pretend to be other people.
it's that pretending which was the worst part of this scene: girl-of-the-month emily's sketchy outline of a plot never ends up cohering, because the standard girlsway method of a half-page story brought to life by improv ends up failing here (as i'd judge it does about half the time). neither of them are outstanding improvisers, and there was no firm directorial hand to shape the narrative, so they just stumble awkwardly in and out of arguing and teasing and reconciling until the sex mercifully begins and they, and the viewer, are at last in their element.
and here is where i talk about the elephant in the room. this is the first proper girlsway release to not be directed by stills by alan in i don't know how long. eli cross is a journeyman pornographer who also does mainstream work, and although his slightly more earthy visual style is a welcome relief from the hot reds and glaring whites of the classic girlsway look, he doesn't have the control over the material that the co-founder of girlsway did. nevertheless, fuck stills by alan, and fuck every pornographer who uses his position of power to prey on young, naive, and defenseless women. i'd sooner see girlsway shut down than have him return to it.
but back to the scene. scarlett sage is a top-tier girl/girl performer, and emily willis is one of the most assured young pornstars in the business, and they have real chemistry on top of being close in real life, so the sexual performance is almost routinely dynamic, engaging, and intense. if they don't chatter like they do when they're not playing characters, they still aren't shy about communicating during sex, so despite the threadbare, go-nowhere plot of the overall scene, they end up providing their sexual encounter with a narrative structure anyway.
the editing was particularly great here, especially in the montage during which emily tries on various outfits (which in-fiction belong to scarlett, but their height difference makes that absurd). you could almost be excused for thinking you were watching something that wasn't made by pornographers. at least until the acting started back up again.
